## Ask about the part you care about

A school notice, an event brochure or a long set of instructions can take a while to get through. AI can help you find your way in.

Start with the question you have: “What do I need to bring?” or “What happens if I can’t attend?” That usually gets you closer to a useful answer than asking for a summary of the entire file.

## Add the file or paste the text

In [Claude](https://claude.ai/), click the **+** beside the message box, choose **Add files or photos**, and pick your document. If you only need one paragraph, paste that into the chat instead.

Other apps have their own attachment buttons. Use the app you already have if it accepts your file.

## Keep asking as you read

“Can you put those dates in order?”

“Which part is about parents rather than students?”

“Explain this paragraph in everyday language.”

You can work through the document a bit at a time.

## Take away a short list

Once you’ve found what matters, ask for a checklist: what to bring, what to do and when. Keep the original nearby so you can return to a detail.

A blurry scan or an awkward table can trip the AI up. If something looks odd, paste that section and ask again.

## Here’s one way to try it

1. Open a chat and add your document: In Claude, use the + button and choose Add files or photos. You can also paste the relevant text.
2. Ask what you actually want to know: Try “What do I need to do before this event?” or “Which dates should I put in my calendar?”
3. Ask where it found the answer: “Show me the paragraph about that” makes it easier to go back to the useful bit.
4. Turn it into something handy: Ask for a short checklist or a few notes you can read on your phone.

## Something to type

Help me read this document. I want to know [my question]. Keep the answer short and show me where you found it. If the document doesn’t say, tell me. Then turn the useful bits into a checklist.

## Worth a quick look

- For a deadline or important rule, read the passage the answer points to.
