# Gemini skills: save the instructions you keep typing

A skill gives Gemini a set of directions you can reuse. The app rollout has started; the Workspace rollout is still delayed.

## What is a skill?

It’s a saved set of instructions for Gemini. Think “write in my usual tone” or “turn my notes into a short checklist.”

Instead of typing the same directions each time, you can reuse them. Google’s September announcement describes skills as a way to bring those directions into your conversations.

## What’s available now?

Google’s October 13 update says skills have started rolling out in the Gemini app, with completion expected by mid-November. The rollout to Workspace apps and Workspace Studio is delayed.

App skills and Workspace skills don’t automatically sync. For now, keep a copy of instructions you want to use in both places.

## What would you save?

Our suggestion: start with a direction you already find yourself repeating.

For example: “Use Traditional Chinese, keep paragraphs short, and end with the next thing I should do.”

Or: “Help me write casual messages. Keep my meaning and don’t add promises.”

Those are ideas to adapt, not results from our own test. If skills haven’t appeared in your account, you can still paste the instructions into a normal chat.
